Cancer Patient Support Society “Dzīvības Koks” took part in an international conference in Minsk (Belarus)

14.06.2015

Representatives from the Cancer Patient Support Society “Dzīvības Koks” (the Tree of Life) took part in an international conference in Minsk (Belarus)  from 11th to 12th June: “The quality of life of cancer patients: systematic approach to organising assistance after active treatment.” The aim of the conference was to promote exchange between patient organisations from European countries and the countries of Eastern Partnership. Additionally, the conference aimed to promote understanding about cancer patient quality of life. The conference was organised by cancer patient support association Social and Educational Institution “In the Name of Life.”
The main issues discussed in the conference involved: how to live after cancer treatment and how to decrease the chance of relapse, what are the newest trends and opportunities in pharmacology, phytotherapy, physiotherapy and oncology nutrition. In addition, other issues considered in the conference were psychological help for cancer patients and their relatives as well as professional and social integration, and how nongovernmental organisations can influence the situation in the modern society.
The Cancer Patient Support Society “Dzīvības Koks” was represented by its chair Gunita Berķe and the chief editor of the cancer patients’ newspaper “Pacienta Balss” (Patient’s Voice) Iveta Smilga-Krongorne. As was stressed by G. Berķe, prevention, diagnostics, treatment, and the process after treatment: all are aspects that are crucial in cancer care. G. Berķe also stated that: “Just 10 years ago it was thought that cancer care ends with the moment when the hospital’s door has been closed. However, research shows that cancer patients are exposed to stress, distress and social isolation risk in the period after treatment, which then decreases quality of life and threatens the cancer patient to live a fulfilling live after cancer. For this reason, psychosocial rehabilitation and psychosocial support are becoming more and  more important in the period after treatment for people who want to reintegrate into active social and economic life.”
In turn, I. Smilga-Krongore talked about the role that information has in quality of life of cancer patients and their relatives. As was emphasised by I. Smilga-Krongorne, knowledge and information are crucial aspects in a crisis situation (and cancer can be regarded as one of them), so that the person can make thoroughly thought through decisions with regard to one’s health. According to I. Smilga-Krongorne, a knowledgeable and well-informed person feels more powerful and secure. She continues by claiming that it is very important to establish and provide informative activities that are adequate to the patient and his or her relatives’ understanding and necessities. The more information, the fewer the stereotypes and fears of the disease.
The conference was attended by representatives from Lithuania, Ukraine, Georgia, Slovenia, Belarus and Latvia. The conference participants agreed to continue  cooperation.
