International Conference “Chronic diseases pose a challenge to 21st century Europe. Patient’s perspective and economic activity” -How is a chronic disease patient dealing with the disease in 21st century Europe?

23.02.2015

International Conference “Chronic diseases pose a challenge to 21st century Europe. Patient’s perspective and economic activity” -How is a chronic disease patient dealing with the disease in 21st century Europe?
In Europe, including Latvia, chronic diseases are becoming an increasing burden on health and social security systems. The list of chronic diseases has been complemented with diseases considered incurable, such as cancer or pulmonary hypertension. A chronic disease is a long term condition for the patient and in most cases, due to improvement of health care, chronic diseases can be successfully controlled as a result of which chronic disease patients' survival is prolonged, thus increasing the total number of chronic patients. For these reasons, it is very important that chronic disease patients, regardless of disease type and age, are included in society’s economic and social life, thus becoming a long-term economic support, not a burden.

This conference is organized with the aim to promote cooperation between patient organizations, industry professionals and decision-makers at the European level. Another aim is to identify issues in relation to chronic patients’ reintegration in an active economic and social life, as well as to come up with concrete action-oriented proposals, which will be included in the common resolution in order to improve opportunities for patients with chronic diseases opportunities to participate in high-quality active economic and social life. The resolution will be submitted to the European Commission, the European Parliament, the EU Council Presidency and EU Member States' governments.

The participants of the conference include the Latvian Parliament and Cabinet representatives, health care professionals, opinion leaders and experts from the Latvian, the European Union and the partner countries, such as Ukraine and Uzbekistan, as well as non-governmental organizations. The participants’ aim is to discuss the challenges at the national and international level and to agree on common action-oriented solutions.

The conference " Chronic diseases pose a challenge to 21st century Europe. Patient’s perspective and economic activity” will be held from 19 to 20 of March at the Riga Latvian Society House and the hotel ”Tigra” conference hall in Priekuļi. Interested parties that wish to participate in the conference need to register with “Dzivibas koks” until 13th of March (including) via www.dzivibaskoks.lv. Please be informed that on March 19th the conference will be held in Latvian and English, but on 20th of March the working language will be English.
